Bar

We apologize for not updating the blog for so long. The environment due to the coronavirus has been so volatile, that we felt it was difficult to follow the ups and downs of the virus situation with its near daily changes.

On June 20, Okayama Prefecture was relieved of its State of Emergency status and the number of new coronavirus cases has dropped considerably. This is great news, however, until more citizens are vaccinated, we hesitate to open the Moooo! Bar to full capacity.

At the moment, the Moooo! Bar is open on weekends to all, but during the week by appointment only. So while we are open every day, we are not actively encouraging guests to come until we ourselves have been vaccinated, a process which will not be complete until August 8th. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

In the meantime, San-chan's on the beach is open every day (they're all vaccinated) serving both food and drink.

Stay safe and we hope to see you during Obon, from August 12-16. (No news yet on whether the Shiraishi Dance will take place this year. We will keep you posted).

Cow Ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08256478707929604269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19193237.post-35299537722601337782020-06-21T21:05:00.001-07:002020-06-21T21:05:12.032-07:00Moooo! Yep, happens almost every day.

Okay, it's settled: The Moooo! Bar will open this year! It was a close call, but since the coronavirus has been limited to Japan's cities, we decided to capitulate to herd demand on Shiraishi Island and open the barn doors for the summer season.

We're aiming for an opening on July 1, but we'll be offering a shortened, mini-moo version of our usual selves as we're short on staff and will continue to be understaffed throughout the summer due to COVID-19. In addition, some of our menu ingredients are sourced from Australia and the US (such as the teats for the Udder Parfaits), so some items will be on hiatus until we can procure substitute items. Moogaritas, Pina Mooladas and other cocktails, however, are still plentiful. So come on by, kick up your hooves and join us for another one of those spectacular Shiraishi sunsets! See you soon.

Lowing softly,

Amy

Head Cow, Moooo! 2020 Shiraishi Island Update for Golden Week

The Moooo! Bar will be closed for Golden Week (April 29-May 6) this year. The International Villa is also closed at the moment due to COVID-19. San-chan's, however, is open as is, I believe, Shiraishi Guest House.

The Shiraishi Kukai Trail Race has been cancelled for May 6. Hopefully it is just post-poned till Autumn, but we're waiting to see how things pan out.

Otafuku Ryokan has been bought out by the Chanter Group, who owns a few hotels around the prefecture. They have remodeled the inside and are running an Italian restaurant as well. They are open for overnight stays.

If you do come out to the island over the holiday period, please wear a mask. Thank you!

From the top of Shiraishi's 160 meter point, you can see both Honshu and Shikoku! Clear blue skies, plenty of "relax time" for reading, and the Bussharito Festival on the 15th (a Buddhist festival with a goma fire ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Thai-style temple) define November on the island.
We ended the Moooo! Bar season with Typhoon 18 in September (no damage) but the beach bar will not be opening again until next summer. Now typhoon 19 is bearing down upon Japan, but thankfully this area has been spared. The ferries have stopped for today, Saturday, but hopefully will resume tomorrow.

The Shiraishi Island Fall Festival will go ahead as planned, taking place on Sunday, Oct. 13. Everyone is welcome!
The Shiraishi Bon dance has been cancelled for Wednesday and Thursday, but no decision has been made yet for the last performance on Friday. Much depends on whether the ferries are up and running and the condition of the beach (where the performance is scheduled to take place).

We'll update the blog as soon as we hear anything. Until then, you can presume the ferries are not running.
After quite a wet rainy season, it looks like the weather is clearing and that we'll have a great Sea Day weekend, July 13-15 (Monday is the national holiday). The Moooo! Bar is looking forward to another great summer on the beach and we hope to see you there!

If you'd like to read up on the island, here are a couple articles I wrote recently for the Japan Times about our island residents. You can visit the places mentioned in the articles when you come out to Shiraishi this summer!

To meet Mimiko Amano who runs a "kyukeisho" on the beach (next-door to the Moooo! Bar), click here.

To meet the island's Buddhist Priest, click here. We had a great cherry blossom season on the island and now that the season is finished, it's time to get out and clean the trails. We've had lots of volunteers out over the past few days and now most of the Shiraishi Pilgrimage route is open! Spring is a great time to experience the 10-kilometer route, a mini-version of the Shikoku 88-Temple Pilgrimage. You'll find 88 stone statues of Kobo Daishi along this trail that will lead you up and over hills, through bamboo forests and along beautiful deserted beaches. We'll even give you a map! See more photos on the Shiraishi Pilgrimage Facebook Page. Like us there to receive updates on the trail.

The Obon Festival of the Dead is from Aug. 12-16 on Shiraishi Island. This is absolutely the best time to be on the island! The Shiraishi Bon Odori, a National Treasure, has been performed every year for over 700 years now. The dance is to appease the souls of the Heike warriors who died in the final battle at Dan'no Ura in the Seto Inland Sea in 1185, marking the end of the Genpei Wars between the Taira and Minamoto clans fighting for control of Japan. After this war, the Kamakura Shogunate ensued. Come out and watch the locals perform the dance, or participate to help appease the souls of the warriors!

Shiraishi Bon Dance schedule for this year is as follows:

Monday evening Aug. 13 Mukaebi (welcoming the spirits back to the island) at the temple and Shiraishi Dance performance.
Tuesday 8pm Aug. 14 Shiraishi Dance (at Kominkan--a great time to learn the dance!)
Wednesday 8pm Aug. 15 Shiraishi Dance (at Kominkan--a great time to learn the dance!)
Thursday evening, sunset, Toronagashi (sending the spirits off via lanterns on the sea) From 7pm the last Shiraishi Dance performance. Takes place on the beach.

If you're planning on seeing the dance, you will need to stay overnight, so please book as soon as possible as everything will soon be full! See accommodations at www.moooobar.com or email shiraishireservations at yahoo dot com.
Waiting for summer, out front of the Moooo! Bar, Shiraishi Island

It's still the rainy season in Japan but the good news is that the summer starts in July. So be sure to start making your summer plans now for visiting Shiraishi Island. We're back to full time blogging now and will help you uncover the treasures of the Seto Inland Sea!

First up, the International Villa is now being managed by Moyo Muya, a Tanzanian artist. He and his wife Ayumi have moved to the island and plan on making it their permanent home :) There couldn't be a better suited couple to take the reins of the International Villa! I visited the villa yesterday and it was absolutely sparkling clean and Moyo has done a great job with the maintenance. The villa books out quickly in the summertime, so contact shiraishireservations at yahoo dot com to get your reservation in!
